Systemic Opt-Out Preferences

Social Sharing and the AddThis Service

Throughout this website you will see the Share This Page Button button or link which allows you to share the page with your friends through a number of popular social networks. This is a free service provided to me by AddThis (, one of the world's largest content sharing and social insights platforms. The social sharing tools AddThis provides are hosted on more than 14 million websites so it must be doing something right.

Why I Chose AddThis — After reviewing the many social sharing tools available to me from a variety of reputable companies, I chose the AddThis service for these reasons—
  • It is the largest, oldest and one of the most reputable online social networking services;
  • It is a member of the leading advertising industry groups focused on privacy, notification, and choice;
  • It does not install any tracking software on your computer;
  • It does not have access to your personal information unless you explicitly provide it;
  • It allows you to easily opt-out of data collection for the purposes of advertising at any time.
So What's The Catch? — In exchange for this free service, AddThis uses the anonymous social data created via its platform to enable publishers and brands to create a more personal and social web experience for consumers. Other than utilizing the free social sharing tool provided to me by AddThis, I am not affiliated with the service nor do I derive any benefit from its use other than the convenience of social networking it allows me to offer users of this site.

The AddThis service may collect certain anonymous information about your visit to this site and may use non-personally identifiable information during your visits to this and other websites in order to provide advertisements throughout the Internet about goods and services likely to be of greater interest to you. These companies typically use third-party cookies to collect this non-personal information. While you will not find advertising on my website, the non-personal information collected from the many websites in which AddThis is enabled, allows AddThis to deliver targeted advertising and personalized content on those websites as well as other websites you may visit that do display ads. Opt-Out of the AddThis Service

If you prefer that AddThis not collect non-personal information about your website visits for the purpose of delivering targeted advertising, it offers an easy way to do so. You will still be able to use the sharing tools made available to you on this or any site that uses AddThis and the sharing service will function the same for you whether or not you choose to opt-out.

When you opt-out of the AddThis service it will place an opt-out cookie on your computer. The opt-out cookie tells AddThis not to use your information for delivering relevant online ads. Please note that if you delete, block, or otherwise restrict cookies, or if you use a different computer or Internet browser, you will need to renew your opt-out choice.

Systemic Opt-Out

If you opt-out of AddThis your preferences apply only to that service. AddThis is only one of many content and social sharing services available which collects and shares non-personal information. However, there are tools available to you to record your opt-out preferences industry-wide, or what I call “systemic opt-out” preferences. To learn more about industry-wide opt-out preferences available to you and to see which participating companies have placed cookies on your computer as you browse the Internet, please visit
